I have decided to do my own version of the writing meme again. I really enjoy working within limits, which is one reason why the Shadowplays appeal so much to me.
So, if you give the following information to me in replies to this post, I will write a short piece or a Shadowplay for you (you will need to specify which):
A line of dialogue A prompt (object, theme, place, character, writing style, literary reference, etc.) Whether you want a short piece or a Shadowplay.
Alternatively, provide me with: A title A line of dialogue OR a prompt Whether you want a short piece or a Shadowplay.
I reserve the right to ignore posts or to ask for a second prompt if I don't think I will be able to go to a creatively productive place with them (particularly with titles). That is, if I think I can't write anything but a limp, tasteless, pathetic attempt at a story with that prompt, I won't. I have some pride, after all. (I hope every much that I'm not going to have to do this-- I did all the prompts last time.)
I also reserve the right to work in anything I like of my own life, observations on the state of the world, and random references into the Shadowplays. :)
Okay, voom! |

I don't usually make open posts (that are not Shadowplays) but this is important information. It comes from Misia here on Livejournal, to whom I am deeply indebted.
Molly of Molly Saves the Day on blogspot has published an abortion manual. In current times, with the very real possibility that Roe vs. Wade will be overturned due to the law that passed in South Dakota, this information is urgently needed.
Women will always have abortions, whether they are legal or not. The decision to have a child is so life-changing and so serious that there will always be situations (medical, emotional, and financial) in which women need to make a choice not to bear a child. Without this information, that choice is life-threatening.
In Chicago before Roe vs. Wade, there were some immensely brave women who created an organization called, simply, Jane. It started when the women were in college and sharing a phone for their floor-- the code for women who needed abortions was to "ask for Jane." They utilized a medical professional until they found that that he has been lying to them and wasn't actually a doctor, at which point they made him teach them how to do abortions and did it themselves.
In their years of operation, they performed 13,000 abortions. They lost one woman-- as Molly points out, that's a better record than live birth in the U.S. They did not discriminate-- women of all colors and creeds were provided abortions without question. The organization operated on donations only. They provided support and counseling for women seeking abortions and as after-abortion care as well.
The seven women running the organization were arrested when there was a change of power in the police department (which had previously ignored them, knowing that they were the only safe method for getting abortions for the wives, daughters, and girlfriends of the police force). Their trial was known as the trial of the Chicago Seven, on trial for providing safe abortions for women who needed them.
Molly has provided us with the first part of the information we need, if we need to create such an option again. Here it is:
http://mollysavestheday.blogspot.com/2006/02/for-women-of-south-dakota-abortion.html
I pray that Roe vs. Wade will not be overturned. I pray that we will not slide backwards into an age where women are seen as less than human, less than adults, unable to make their own decisions about their bodies. I pray that I will not see twelve-year-olds bearing the children of their fathers and uncles and grandfathers.
I also intend to fight like hell for our rights. But we may need this information as well, and soon. I encourage all women to save a copy for themselves, and continue following Molly's journal for more information and other options (such as accessing RU-486).
Remember the Chicago Seven. Remember Jane. |

[Scene: A-ko and B-ko sit at an frilly iron garden table, in chairs with curlicues.]
A-ko: So then I said, well, what about the balloons? And he said it was really more about the appointments than anything else. So then I made a list--to help us keep on track, you know--
B-ko: A-ko, have you got enough tea there?
A-ko: There is not enough tea in the world.
B-ko: [Pours tea from a tall, elaborate pot] Everything's been so calm lately.
A-ko: Oh, yes. No explosions.
[Silence. A cat meows in the distance.]
B-ko: More tea?
A-ko: I haven't drunk any yet.
[Scene: the stage is utterly dark]
C-ko: Gir? A-ko? B-ko? Anyone?
Anyone: ...
C-ko: I seem to be lost.
[Silence. No cat meows anywhere.]
C-ko: I should have looked where I was going. I should have packed a bag. I should have made sure the door was locked. I should have let people know I was leaving. I should have brought a book. I should have managed better. I should have gotten it right the first time. I should have showed more backbone. I should have been more conciliatory. I should have worked harder. I should have passed.
Anyone: ...
C-ko: I guess it's not so bad, being lost.
Anyone: ...
C-ko: Although I kind of wish I were anywhere else. Or else that I could find the darn light switch.
[Scene: A-ko and B-ko at the little iron cafe table]
B-ko: So, how are you, A-ko?
A-ko: I'm lovely, thank you for asking. And you?
B-ko: Couldn't be better.
[Silence. A crow struts under the table, then flies away.]
A-ko: So, how are you, B-ko?
B-ko: Fine and lively. I hope you are well?
A-ko: I've never been better.
B-ko: I'm so glad to hear it.
[Silence. A lizard scuttles under the table, pausing to hiss at A-ko's foot.]
B-ko: And how have you been?
A-ko: Quite well, thank you. And how have you been yourself?
B-ko: Fine.
[Silence. A mongoose lopes under the table, picks up a fallen cookie, and scampers off.]
A-ko: In fact, everything's been quite delightful lately--
B-ko: It has not. It's all been dreadful. Where on earth has C-ko got to?
A-ko: I didn't intend for her to take the play personally.
B-ko: Persons oughtn't to take things personally.
[Silence. A chicken walks under the table, clucking, pauses to lay an egg, and wanders off, stage left.] |

[Scene: A-ko, B-ko, and C-ko, all wearing the usual female Ohtori uniforms, are sitting underneath a large tree. Gir is not in sight.]
C-ko: Well, that was a disaster.
B-ko: I couldn't even find anyone to challenge.
A-ko: Goodness, what a long, lazy afternoon. [Yawns, folds her arms behind her head and lies back.]
C-ko: The question is, what has happened?
B-ko: The question is, what do we do?
A-ko: The question is-- what on earth is Gir doing? Zie's vanished under that hedge! [She gets to her feet and trots off, to the right. "Camera" follows her as she stops and peers under a large rosebush into a dark-looking hole.]
A-ko: Gir? Are you all right?
Gir's voice: [faintly] OooOOOoo! There's a dodo down here! Hello, dodo!
A-ko: What? [She leans forward and falls down the hole.]
